We recently surveyed a cross section of companies in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska to see how their staffing needs may have changed in the past year as the business climate shifted. Culminated from the 1,170 businesses that we surveyed, here is what we learned:
We asked those surveyed: "What do you consider your largest staffing challenge in today's market?" Of those who responded...
14% said retaining current talent
15% said finding and attracting new talent
50% said both retaining and finding talent
21% did not know or did not respond
It appears that it is equally challenging to find and attract the right talent, as it is to retain the talent once they have joined an organization.
We then wanted to know whether the shifting business climate has influenced current staffing challenges. We asked: "Are your staffing challenges different from a year ago?"
Of those who said "yes", the majority cited the economic shift as the major contributing factor.
To further explore employee retention, we asked, What position has the highest turnover rate in your company? The results follow:
34% Clerical/Administrative
30% Light Industrial
15% Customer Service/Sales
8% Accounting/Banking/Finance
6% Technical Skills
7% All Others
Of those indicating highest turnover in Clerical/Administrative roles, 50% indicated their Receptionist positions had the highest turnover rate, while 29% said their Administrative Assistants turned over most. 29% Clerical/Administrative
24% Light Industrial
17% Customer Service/Sales
9% Accounting/Banking/Finance
9% Technical Skills
12% All Others
In the Clerical/Administrative category, 87% of those surveyed had the most difficulty filling their Receptionist positions, while 26% indicated Administrative Assistant positions were hardest to fill. If you are interested in further detail, contact an Adams Staffing Specialist.

27% Vacant Positions including Especially Hard to Fill Positions (15%)
19% Vacation/Sick Leave/Maternity Leave
